Milestone Birthday Session | Ethan Turns 11

Every year, I bring my boys into the studio for a special milestone birthday session. It’s basically one of my favorite traditions. This year, my oldest, Ethan, turned 11—and of course, we celebrated with a simple, fun session all about him.

I always remind families that milestone sessions aren’t just for cake smashes and little ones. These moments matter at every age. For Ethan’s session, all we needed was a number balloon, his favorite songs playing through the speaker, and my camera. That’s it! And it was perfect.

These sessions are about capturing personality—just as they are in this stage of life. Ethan at 11 is funny, smart, and always eager to try new things and learn as much as he can. Watching him relax into the session, laugh, and let his true self shine is exactly why I love doing these year after year. Sometimes we keep it simple with just the balloon. Other times, we add in a favorite sport, hobby, or something they love at the moment. Either way, it’s always uniquely them.

The best part? Firstly, looking back at the growth and changes through the years. Seeing how their faces mature, their interests evolve, and how each session basically becomes a little time capsule of who they were at that exact age.

For me, these sessions are incredibly special as a mom. I know how quickly time goes, and having these portraits of Ethan—and of Henry each year too—unquestionably means the world to me. They are a reminder that birthdays don’t just mark a number; they capture a moment in time we’ll never get back.

Happy 11th birthday, Ethan—you’re growing into such an amazing young man, and I’m so grateful I get to capture every step along the way.
